    • Jaguar bumps the XJR's supercharged V8 to 575 horsepower for 2018 but so what?

Jaguar offers something different in the segment which is a supercharged V8. Their European rivals all feature turbocharged V8 powerplants. It is nice to have a different option but the reality is from a performance perspective Jaguar can not compete.

Is 575 horsepower a lot? Not really in 2017 when you factor in that BMW, Mercedes, and Audi all pretty much sandbag their output. Plus, they offer much more torque.

Jaguar's modest increase of 25 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque over the previous model year does not mean much of anything.

The 516 lb-ft of torque are sent through a ZF 8-speed auto which is a very popular box these days.

The 2018 XJR575 will not top an Audi S8 in straightline performance but perhaps Jaguar is looking for a buyer than wants something lighter and more nimble. At 41XX pounds the XJR not only undercuts the BMW 7, Audi A8, and Mercedes S-Class significantly it is even lighter than the mid-size offerings from the Germans.

This may be the most fun to drive car in the class.

I'm stunned the XJ weighs that little, we've got coupes over 4100lbs now! I just checked and the new XF is listed at only 3700 lbs, these Jags are really impressing me even if their engine and transmission technology is a bit behind, they've got the right fundamentals for actual spirited driving.

They incorporate a lot of aluminum and started doing it with the previous gen cars.

The F-Types are fatter than they should be but the XJ is amazingly light for that class.

Yeah, it's bizarre that their sedans have the best weight in class meanwhile the f type is pretty chunky at ~3500 lbs. That's almost 300 lbs more than a 991.2 C2S, well hopefully the replacement looks as good and uses a bit more of that aluminium design.

It's more than that when you look at the all wheel drive models... way more.
